Maude Coburn Ewen papers, 1897-1972.

The collection documents the life of Maude Coburn Ewen (1887-1975) of Barre, Vermont, from her days as a student at Spaulding High School (1903-1907), through her marriage, loss of a brother, John Coburn (1889-1919) during the First World War, her work as a music teacher, and her struggle to stay financially solvent in the 1930s. Maude's copious notes from high school classes reflect the curriculum and culture of the era. The collection also contains correspondence regarding the purchase and sale of a grocery store in Hartford, Vermont and three months of correspondence between Maude and her mother, while her mother was recuperating from an operation in Worcestor, Massachusetts. Official paperwork related to the death of her brother, John, in France during World War I is included. The collection also includes many utility bills, sales receipts for automobiles and household purchases, and other documents of daily living. The collection includes birth records of Maude's husband, James M. Ewen, and his mother, Elspeth Marr Ewen, from Aberdeen, Scotland, and many unlabelled photographs, presumably of family members. Property deeds dating from 1887-1929 are also included.
